Tiger Woods on The Masters
Apr 15, 2019
Interviewer: "What's the tournament that really captures your imagination? "
Tiger Woods: "The Masters."
Interviewer: "Why is that? "
Tiger Woods: "The way blacks have been treated there... Ya know? They shouldn't be there. If I win that tournament, it would be really big for us."
Tiger said these words in 1989. It is easy to forget that before 1983, caddies were designated to black males only. It's easy to overlook that they didn't allow black members until 1990 and no female members until 2012... let that sink in: The Augusta National Golf Course wouldn't allow women members until more than a decade into the 21st century.
Congratulations Tiger Woods. In 1997, he became the first black man to win and he is only one win away from tying the all-time record at a course that wouldn't let a black man participate until 1975.
